Hot Spur (1968) is a raw, unflinching exploitation Western that captures the brutal underbelly of the American frontier like few films of its era dared.
Directed by Lee Frost (with producing muscle from Bob Cresse), this 91-minute Eastmancolor drive-in shocker follows Carlo, a young Mexican haunted by the gang rape and death of his sister years earlier at the hands of American ranch hands. When he recognizes one of the perpetrators—wealthy Arizona rancher Jason O’Hare—he infiltrates the ranch as a stableboy. Prejudice, casual cruelty, and sexual tension simmer until Carlo kidnaps O’Hare’s wife Susan and lures the men into a deadly trap in the hills, turning the tables in a cycle of vengeance as savage as the original crime.
What makes Hot Spur fascinating for cinema lovers is its unapologetic place in the late-’60s “roughie” tradition. Shot with a vibrant yet grimy palette (and partly at the infamous Spahn Ranch), it anticipates the revisionist Westerns that would soon arrive, stripping away romantic myths to show the West as a landscape of trauma, racism, and exploitation. Frost delivers nonstop intensity—violence, nudity, and moral ambiguity—without a single soft edge.
Though never a mainstream classic, Hot Spur 1968 remains a cult curiosity for fans of exploitation cinema and dark Westerns.
